Top Bottle
How do water coolers work? if you were to pierce the top of the bottle will this cause the machine to flood?
I have on more than one occasion found holes in the top of a water bottle that has been placed on top of our water cooler in the office. this has resulted in water going everywhere after it was left unattended. i believe it may have something to do with pressure but have been arguing about it with my colleagues, i would be grateful if anyone could help. Thankyou!!!!!
The water cooler has a ball and seat type valve with a rubber o-ring against a funnel like opening, forced down by a light spring, being the sealing mechanism. It has to be very lightly seated otherwise it would take too much force to open the valve. The vacuum inside the bottle is needed in order to keep the head pressure of the water from forcing the valve open. If there is sufficient water in the bottle it will naturally force the valve open until the head pressure drops enough to allow the weakly sprung valve to reclose.
